If you like Smash, you’re going to love the Austin Theatre Project’s production of Edges. Written by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul whose songs are featured on Season Two of the hit NBC show, the show does not have “a plotline with music interspersed throughout.” Rather, each song is a story within itself woven into the fabric of these 20-somethings lives. Their journey takes the audience gently by hand as together we revisit those painful years of growing up before beginning to grow old.
Sara Burke, Joey Banks, Taylor Moessinger and Brian Losoya bring their considerable singing and acting talents to breathe life into these new yet oh so familiar characters as they navigate precariously along the “edges” of their lives as they move into adulthood. Some of the more memorable moments of the show are “Be my Friend” aka the Facebook Song, “Caitlyn and Hailey” , and “Monticello” each one of those songs the cast really displays the emotions and vulnerability of the lyrics.
Director Barbara Schuller has created her best show to date in our humble opinion, aided by the talented David Blackburn who doubled as Scenic Designs, Band Leader, and Musical Director. Blackburn does a superb job of leading the cast and band through all of the music of the show and keeping the pace clipping and the songs feeling as current as they are!
Directed by Barbara Schuler, Edges runs February 28-March 3 and March 7-10 at Dougherty Arts Center in Austin. Showtimes are 7:30 pm Thurs. – Sat. Sunday performances are at 3:00 pm.
